Mail Servers

POP3
The Post Office Protocol (version 3) is the most recent standard of the protocl for receiving email. POP3 is a protocol in which email is received and held for you by your hosting provider (us). The important factor with this protocol is that once you've received an email (downloaded to your emai client) it is no longer stored on the server. The POP3 protocol most commonly uses TCP Port 110 (plain text or TLS encryption) or TCP Port 995 (SSL) by default.

IMAP
The Internet Message Access Protocol is similar to POP3 in that it is a protocl which receives email and is held for you by your hosting provider (us). The important difference in that the email stays on the server and can be accessed more than once by multiple email clients. The IMAP protocol most commonly uses TCP Port 143 (plain text or TLS encryption) or TCP Port 993 (SSL) by default.

SMTP
The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is used for sending emails. Originally it was designed to use TCP Port 25 as a default but due to security concerns it more oftenly uses TCP port 26, 465 (SSL), or 587 (TLS).

Our Specifics

Every website that is hosted with us has their own mail server available with a self-generated SSL certificate to keep your incoming and outgoing email secure. However, these certificates are not signed for your specific domain so you may see security warnings. If you wish you may purchase your own SSL certificate which would get rid of these warnings. Five Buck Hosting only supports IMAP/POP/SMTP via SSL/TLS in order to help keep you secure.
