What is a domain name?

A domain name is simply a human friendly address which is used so that a one computer can find another on the internet.

Every computer that accesses the internet has an IP address (something like '123.456.789.012'). Of course this sort of address would be extremely difficult for your customers, friends, relatives, etc. to remember. Domain names allow them to simply remember a word or string of words in order to find your website on the internet.

Domain names can never truly be owned. They are leased through a registrar (like FiveBuckHosting.com) for a period usually ranging from 1 year to 5 years and are generally purchased with a website hosting account.
